Boxsprings, Foundations & Adjustable Bases |
A box spring is a combination of wood, steel spring, or torsion modules that act like a shock absorber for a traditional spring mattress. A foundation is more of a solid box covered in matching fabric, for use with a latex, memory foam, or inner spring mattresses. A boxspring acts as a shock absorber for your mattress. A foundation is the support structure for your mattress. That means that with the proper boxspring or foundation, your mattress will endure. Today's newer mattresses are designed to work together with its "matched" boxspring or foundation. Please be aware that your foundation or boxspring can double in weight over its 7 to 10 year lifetime in dust mites and their feces. For a healthier night's sleep always purchase the mattress and boxspring or foundation together. Don't mix and match. Mattresses and boxspring or foundation that come as a set are sold that way for a reason-and they're tested that way to comply with consumer flammability standards. When you mix and match a mattress and a boxspring, the flammability standards no longer apply, and you could be putting you or your family members in harm's way. New mattresses are heavier than they were 10 years ago so if you do decide to reuse your existing mattress it will eventually sink into the worn areas of the boxspring or foundation, removing the comfort from your night's sleep. The last issue is that many brands will void the warranty if the mattress is not using the recommended boxspring or foundation. Some mattress companies offer a "split boxspring," which involves two smaller boxsprings or foundations instead of one large one. A king boxspring will always be split. Queen is usually one large boxspring but may come split if needed. No. Platform beds are designed to use a mattress alone. You will not need a boxspring or foundation. Keep in mind though, that a platform bed will give the mattress a slightly firmer feel than if it were on a boxspring, so purchase a mattress that is a degree softer than you might otherwise select. If your mattress is an all foam mattress such as latex of visco-elastic and the platform bed does not have a strong slat system supporting it, your mattress may require a ventilated deck to help to support the mattress. An adjustable base moves both the legs and back upward to the healthiest position. An example would be a neutral posture position which releases all the stress on the lower back and spine caused by our own musculature and gravity.
It is also good for watching television or reading without stressing the back or neck. Some adjustable bases have a vibrate function that can relax you and lull you to sleep. Don't worry about falling asleep with the vibrate function on; there is an auto-shutoff function that allows the vibrate function to turn off after a given amount of time. The split adjustable base is what we like to call the "marriage saver". The base allows for each side of the bed to lift the back and legs separately. Each side of the bed may have their own remote to control the position of the base. The H Bed is a split mattress with a common area. When used with an adjustable base it allows each individual to control their back and leg position without the mattress separating and leaving a gap. On a standard bed frame, the H Bed reduces side to side motion better than any latex or spring mattress on the market. This may also be a "marriage saver" if your partner constantly tosses and turns as they sleep. |
