A California King mattress is 72" x 84", so it is 4" narrower and 4" longer than a Standard King (also known as an Eastern King). The Standard King is 76"x80"

People who are very tall (6'2" or taller) will benefit from a California King. This is also a good size if you have a long narrow master suite.
